Altar Servers and Myrrhbearers

Altar Servers

Serving in the altar of St. Katherine Church is a profound and formative year-round ministry. All boys and young men at least seven years old who have been baptized and chrismated in the Orthodox Christian faith are strongly encouraged to take part in this privilege.

This sacred opportunity is open to any eligible boy or young man who wants to participate regularly, has a teachable spirit and can responsibly follow directions during services. Through active participation in the Divine Liturgy and many other services, our altar ministry teaches boys and young men the ways of our ancient liturgical tradition.

For more information, contact our Altar Servers lead, Nick Kretsedemas, at dkretsedemas@cox.net, or Fr. Timothy at priest@st-katherine.org.

Myrrhbearers

Open to girls and young women from seven years of age, the Myrrhbearers ministry helps our youngest female parishioners take an active part in the life of the Church. Myrrhbearers serve the Church in special ways, and we hope they continue to do so throughout their lives. The ministry includes:

  • Becoming tonsured Readers of the Sunday Epistle

  • Learning to prepare the liturgical breads and koliva (memorial wheat)

  • Learning to care for and clean liturgical items

  • Learning to prepare the church for feast days

  • Mentoring younger Myrrhbearers

  • Peer pastoral care and outreach

For more information about this ministry, contact Fr. Timothy at priest@st-katherine.org.
